Developing Agats' sustainble community through fostering and improving their education, health and nutrition.
Why Asmat?
Asmat is the poorest region in Indonesia. They are relatively isolated and geographically difficult to reach. The villages are widely spread along the riverbanks within the dense swamp and rainforest. They have limited source of food and although Asmat is covered with heavy vegetations, due to the swamp conditions, the land is not suitable for farming nor planting edible plants. Their infrastructure is very limited thus electricity and clean water sources are not available. In ”more developed areas” collecting rain water becomes the only source for clean water since they cannot find ground water (well). Most people of Asmat are not educated and do not have life skills that can help them improve their livelihood.
“Together, we can give them a better place to live in.”

Since March 2018, a basic education program was started using limited funds from the church. The program is conducted every Friday to Sunday with 3 weekly visits per month. The learning activities are conducted inside the Church with very minimum resources. Due to our donations since July 2018, the Church is the only “building” with limited electricity. Because of the measles outbreak and famines, the church has been giving nutritious food, vitamins and medicines using the limited funds they got from Agat’s diocese (fund received from donors during the measles outbreak in January 2018).

With ten gardens and counting, Project Sprout has seen a significant improvement in mental and physical health for all participating community members. Other than lowering obesity, blood pressure, and depression rates, the crime rate has also fallen. Our children are doing better in school, reporting higher grades and aspirations, and better job prospects.
