Hundreds of children from 15 villages supported by Agats Volunteers (Ragats) - Asmat Indonesia Volunteer Foundation received knowledge and understanding of dental and oral health. This activity via zoom media was held thanks to the Asmat Health Education (Ese Asmat) program in collaboration with Ragats and Perpetua J. Safanpo Regional Hospital. Drg Yenny Young Yong was the resource person providing material on dental and oral health for children.

The shape and structure of teeth, pattern and color of teeth, and oral conditions were some of the sections presented during the webinar, supported by several short films about lifestyle patterns and behaviors related to teeth and mouth.

The children showed enthusiasm when participating in this activity. Starting from Ewer, Yepem, Per, Uwus, Bayun, Yaosakor, Amborep, Amanamkai, Warse, Bayun, Kapi, Komor and Ayam. Their curiosity after being shown pictures and films by drg Yenny.

The questions during the Q&A also flowed well, "Doctor, how many times should we brush our teeth?", "Can eating sago damage teeth?", "If a tooth has been pulled, can the tooth be pulled again a second time?", and "Is swallowing toothpaste dangerous?" These children's various questions showed their curiosity about dental and oral health.

Not only with understanding materials, Ragats also provides toothbrushes and toothpaste for the tooth brushing practice movement in 15 schools spread across 15 villages. A total of 50 toothbrushes and 50 toothpastes are prepared for 15 villages so that the tooth brushing movement becomes a healthy lifestyle habit for children.

This Asmat Health Education Series is planned to last 5 (five) meetings with 5 different topics.

Hopefully with this health webinar activity, the health level of Asmat children will continue to increase, starting from dental and oral health.

Health Social Service: "Healthy for All"

Ragats in collaboration with KMKI (Komunitas Medik Katolik Indonesia) of Agats Diocese and Nakai Health Center, conducted a health service in Aou Village, Agats - Papua. Aou Village was chosen as the place for the social service because it is located in the interior, far from health facilities. This village is located more than 3 hours away by speed boat from Agats city.

Due to the remote location, since Saturday, the team spent the night in Aou village, enjoying an afternoon of playing, singing together, followed by PHBS (Clean and Healthy Lifestyle) education through videos, and watching cartoons together with the children of Aou village. In addition, on Saturday there was also a distribution of baby, child and adult clothes, as well as distribution of notebooks and pens.

Health services began on Sunday after mass, attended by 81 patients consisting of 15 infants and 66 adults. Health services included general and pediatric examinations, malaria, Hb, blood sugar, and cholesterol checks. The service also provided boiled eggs and mung bean porridge for children and mothers.

The most common types of illnesses are coughs, fever, boils, headaches, body aches, and diarrhea.

A special thing to note in this social service activity is that Aou village currently lacks clean water due to the lack of water reservoirs, besides that residents also still lack awareness of the need to cook water before drinking.

Furthermore, followup monitoring of the health conditions of Aou villagers will be carried out by the Nakai health center through the posyandu.

“Sex Education & Puberty” Workshop

Today, September 26 2023, Ragats and Nonawoman held a workshop entitled "Sex Education & Puberty".

The workshop was attended by young women and young mothers in the villages of Per, Uwus, Ewer.

The main problem raised by workshop participants was limited access to sanitary napkins in the village and the hygienic use of cloth as a substitute for sanitary napkins.

Sanitary napkins are only sold in Agats city. They use cloth sanitary napkins or rags from clothes that are no longer used as sanitary napkins. Considering the limited water there (everyday life uses rainwater), it cannot be ensured that cloth sanitary napkins are clean for health.

Apart from that, there is also limited knowledge of young women and mothers regarding sexually transmitted diseases.

Thank you to Nonawoman for bringing the workshop.

Ragats will follow up on the results of the workshop.
